Rug Size Guide: How to Pick the Right Rug for Your Sofa
A rug that is the wrong size is the single biggest visual mistake in most living rooms. Too small and the room looks fractured. Too large and the rug overwhelms the furniture. The right size anchors the sofa, defines the space, and pulls every design element together. This guide covers the rules that work for every sofa style and living room size.
Once you know the rug rule for your sofa configuration, the rest of the room assembles naturally.
The One-Sentence Rule
A rug should extend at least 6 inches past each end of the sofa (ideally 12 inches) and be large enough that at least the front legs of every piece of seating furniture sit on it.
That single rule eliminates 90 percent of rug-sizing mistakes. The rest is about committing to one of three placement philosophies below.
The 3 Rug Placement Options
- All legs on the rug: the rug is large enough that every furniture leg sits on it. Most formal look. Needs a big rug.
- Front legs on the rug: the rug runs under the front legs of the sofa and accent chairs. Most common. Works in most rooms.
- No legs on the rug: the rug sits in front of the sofa like a bath mat. Only works in small rooms or as a layered rug.
Pick the philosophy first, then size the rug to match.
Rug Sizes by Sofa Length
| Sofa Length | Minimum Rug Size | Preferred Rug Size |
|---|---|---|
| 60 to 72 inches (loveseat) | 5 x 8 feet | 6 x 9 feet |
| 72 to 84 inches (standard) | 6 x 9 feet | 8 x 10 feet |
| 84 to 96 inches (large) | 8 x 10 feet | 9 x 12 feet |
| 96 inches plus (oversized) | 9 x 12 feet | 10 x 14 feet |
Rug Sizes for Sectionals
Sectionals complicate the math. Measure both the length of the main sofa portion and the chaise extension. The rug should accommodate both. For most L-sectionals up to 100 x 80 inches, a 9 x 12 foot rug works. Larger U-sectionals need 10 x 14 or 12 x 15.

Shape Matters: Rectangular, Round, Runner
- Rectangular: the default. Works for 90 percent of rooms and sofa styles.
- Round: best under a round coffee table. Also pairs well with a curved sofa.
- Runner: too narrow for most living rooms but good for narrow rooms or behind a floated sofa.
- Square: rare but useful for square seating groups or small rooms.
Small Room Rug Rules
In a small living room, the temptation is to go small on the rug. Resist. A generously sized rug visually enlarges a small room. Follow the "at least the front legs" rule even in a 10 x 12 foot room; a 6 x 9 rug often feels right.

Layering Rugs
Layering a smaller rug on top of a larger jute or sisal base is a designer trick that works in nearly any room. The base rug does the sizing job; the top rug provides color and texture. Budget-friendly: use a cheaper natural-fiber base and splurge on a smaller statement rug.
Material for Under the Sofa
- Wool: most durable, naturally stain-resistant, ages well
- Cotton: washable, affordable, less durable
- Jute and sisal: natural fiber, works as a layer base
- Synthetic (polypropylene): budget, stain-resistant, less luxurious feel
- Viscose and silk: beautiful but stain quickly; avoid under heavy-use sofas

Common Mistakes
- Too small: a 5 x 7 rug under an 84-inch sofa looks lost. Always size up.
- Too dark for the room: a dark rug absorbs light in a small or north-facing room.
- Wrong shape for the furniture: a rectangular rug under a round table fights the geometry.
- Not enough contrast: a rug that blends with the floor and sofa disappears.
- Ignoring rug pad: a quality rug pad extends rug life and prevents slipping.
