Right-arm-facing and left-arm-facing sectionals trip up buyers every day. The terminology sounds intuitive but means the opposite of what most people think. Order the wrong orientation and the sectional arrives in pieces that do not fit your living room. The fix is a refund or restocking fee, plus another 4 to 6 weeks of shipping.

This guide locks in the right answer. You will order correctly on the first try.

The Single Rule to Remember

The orientation is described from the perspective of someone sitting on the sofa, looking out at the room. Not from the perspective of someone standing in the room looking at the sofa.

  • Right-arm facing (RAF): the arm is on the right side when you are sitting on the sofa
  • Left-arm facing (LAF): the arm is on the left side when you are sitting on the sofa

This is the opposite of what intuition suggests. Most buyers assume orientation is from the viewer's perspective. Always confirm the brand uses the industry standard.

Right-Arm Facing (RAF)

A right-arm-facing chaise sectional has the extended chaise on the right side when you are sitting on the sofa looking out. From the doorway looking in, the chaise is on your left.

If you want the chaise on the right side of the room from the entrance, you need a left-arm-facing sectional (confusing, yes).

Left-Arm Facing (LAF)

A left-arm-facing chaise sectional has the chaise on the left side from the sitter's perspective. From the doorway, the chaise appears on your right.

Draw a quick diagram before ordering. Sit imaginary in your future couch spot, look at the room, and decide which side the chaise should extend toward.

Chaise vs Chofa vs Corner

Different sectional shapes use different terminology:

  • Chaise sectional: a main sofa with a chaise extending off one end. RAF and LAF describe the chaise position.
  • Chofa (or chaise sofa): same thing, different brand terminology.
  • Corner sectional: a true 90-degree L-shape with equal arms. Usually just called L-shaped. RAF and LAF describe which arm extends further.
  • U-shaped sectional: three sides. No RAF/LAF, just dimensions.

The 30-Second Room Test

  1. Stand in the doorway of the room where the sectional will go.
  2. Walk to where the sofa will sit and turn around to face the TV or focal point.
  3. Decide which side of the couch the chaise should extend toward. This is from your sitting perspective.
  4. If the chaise should be on your right hand, order RAF. If on your left hand, order LAF.
  5. Double-check against the brand's diagram before submitting the order.

Modular Sectionals That Skip the Issue

Modular cloud couches solve the orientation problem by being reconfigurable. Each module is independent. You arrange them in whatever layout fits your room. Move to a new apartment and reconfigure for the new space.

The Common Buyer Mistake

Buyers confuse the sitter's perspective and the viewer's perspective. They order RAF when they mean LAF, or vice versa. The sectional arrives and the chaise is on the wrong side.

Some brands actually invert the terminology (using viewer's perspective) to avoid buyer confusion. Always check the brand's specific diagrams and confirm in writing which side the chaise will be on from the doorway before finalizing the order.

U-Shaped Sectionals

U-shaped sectionals have three sides: main sofa and two chaises or loveseat extensions at either end. No RAF/LAF to worry about. Just confirm overall dimensions and chaise depths.

U-shapes need 16 x 13 feet minimum of room space to avoid blocking traffic. They work best in dedicated media rooms or large living rooms.

Measuring Your Room Before Ordering

  • Measure the wall the main sofa will sit against. The sofa portion plus the chaise extension cannot exceed this.
  • Measure the perpendicular wall or walkway. The chaise extension cannot block this.
  • Measure the entry path. Each module usually needs to fit through a 32-inch doorway.
  • Measure stairwells and elevator depths. Single-piece sectionals often will not fit.
  • Mark the final layout with painter's tape. Walk the floor for 10 minutes before ordering.

FAQ

Is RAF from the sitter or viewer perspective?
Industry standard is the sitter's perspective. Right-arm-facing means the arm is on your right when you are sitting on the sofa looking out. This is the opposite of the viewer's perspective from the doorway. Always confirm with the brand's diagram.
Can I return a sectional ordered in the wrong orientation?
Most brands allow returns with restocking fees (15 to 25 percent plus shipping). Some offer free one-time swaps. Modular brands often let you reorient the existing modules to work in the new layout, avoiding the return entirely.
What is the easiest way to avoid the RAF/LAF confusion?
Choose a modular sectional where you can reorient modules yourself. This eliminates the need to pre-commit to an orientation. Modular cloud couches and similar reconfigurable designs skip the problem entirely.
Does orientation matter for U-shaped sectionals?
Less so. U-shapes are symmetrical by design, with chaises or extensions on both ends. No RAF/LAF to confuse. Just confirm overall dimensions and that the shape fits your room.
