How to Remove Sunscreen Stains from a Sofa
Sunscreen stains are one of the nastiest stain categories in upholstery. The titanium dioxide and zinc oxide in modern mineral sunscreens oxidize when they hit fabric, creating a permanent yellow or rust-colored mark. Chemical sunscreens with avobenzone create similar staining. Standard cleaning methods rarely remove set sunscreen. The right method, done fast, does.
This guide covers the fast-action method, plus what to try if the stain has already set.
Why Sunscreen Stains Are Hard
Sunscreen combines oil bases (for skin feel) with active ingredients (titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, avobenzone). The oil penetrates the fabric. The active ingredient oxidizes with air and creates permanent discoloration. Standard soap-and-water cleaning removes the oil but not the oxidized residue.
Fast-Action Method (Within 1 Hour)
- Lift any visible sunscreen with a spoon or butter knife (do not rub)
- Sprinkle cornstarch or baking soda over the stain; leave 20 minutes
- Vacuum up the powder
- Mix 1 tablespoon dish soap with 1 cup warm water
- Dab (not rub) the solution onto the stain with a microfiber cloth
- Blot with a clean damp cloth to rinse
- Air dry
If the stain is removed, done. If residual yellowing remains, proceed to the set-stain method.
Set Stain Method
For sunscreen stains that have sat for hours or days:
- Mix 1 tablespoon dish soap, 1 tablespoon white vinegar, 2 cups warm water
- Dab onto stain, let sit 10 minutes
- Blot with damp cloth
- If yellowing persists, try rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball (test hidden spot first)
- Rinse with clean water
- Air dry
For severely set sunscreen stains, professional cleaning is often the only option.
Adjustments by Fabric Type
- Linen and cotton: the method above works well
- Velvet: dab only, do not scrub the pile
- Leather: use a specific leather cleaner, not water-based solutions
- Microfiber (code S): solvent only; see our deep clean microfiber guide
- Performance fabric: water-based method works; check care label

Prevention
- Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before sitting on upholstery
- Use washable throws over the couch during summer months
- Wipe hands and arms with a damp towel before sitting
- Consider performance fabric for outdoor-use sofas
- Use removable machine-washable covers where possible
For outdoor-specific upholstery, see our best outdoor sofas guide.
Products That Do Not Work
- Bleach (yellows some fabrics more, damages whites)
- Hot water (sets sunscreen oil into fibers)
- Cold water alone (does not cut the oil)
- Ammonia (can damage dye)
- Generic carpet cleaners (too harsh on upholstery)
When to Call a Professional
- Stain has been set more than a week
- Fabric code is S or X (dry-clean only)
- Fabric is velvet, silk, or expensive wool
- Home methods have not worked
- Sofa is high-value (designer or heirloom)
