Microfiber couches are forgiving until they suddenly are not. Daily spills wipe off easily. But once a stain sets, or years of skin oil build up, microfiber goes from looking fine to looking tired quickly. A proper deep clean at home, done once a year, prevents that slide and extends a microfiber couch's usable life by years.

This guide covers the specific method for deep-cleaning microfiber at home, plus the mistakes that damage fabric.

Why Microfiber Is Different

Microfiber fibers are tiny, tightly woven, and slightly textured. This resists stains better than standard fabric, but also traps skin oil and debris in ways that are harder to remove. A deep clean releases the built-up residue that normal cleaning cannot reach.

Read the Cleaning Code First

Every couch has a cleaning code on the tag (usually under a cushion):

  • W: water-based cleaners only
  • S: solvent cleaners only (no water)
  • WS or SW: either works
  • X: vacuum only, professional clean for anything else

Code S microfibers cannot get wet. Water will ring or stain the fabric. Use dry-clean solvent only.

Tools You Need

  • Vacuum with upholstery tool
  • Soft-bristle brush (a toothbrush works for small areas)
  • Two microfiber cleaning cloths
  • Distilled water (tap water can leave mineral rings)
  • Mild dish soap (clear, non-bleach) for W code
  • Rubbing alcohol for S code
  • Spray bottle

The Step-by-Step Method

For code W or WS:

  1. Vacuum: full couch, including under cushions and in seams
  2. Mix solution: 2 cups distilled water plus 1 teaspoon mild dish soap in spray bottle
  3. Mist a section: never soak; just mist until slightly damp
  4. Brush gently: work the solution into the fabric with soft brush
  5. Blot with dry microfiber cloth: lift the solution and loosened residue
  6. Repeat: move to next section, one area at a time
  7. Air dry: fully before sitting (usually 2 to 4 hours)
  8. Buff with dry brush: restores the soft microfiber nap

For code S:

  1. Vacuum thoroughly
  2. Apply rubbing alcohol to a cloth (not directly to fabric)
  3. Blot stain or area in a single direction
  4. Air dry
  5. Brush to restore nap

Stain-Specific Adjustments

  • Ink: rubbing alcohol (even on code W)
  • Grease: cornstarch sprinkled on, left 15 minutes, vacuumed, then soap method
  • Red wine: see our red wine removal guide
  • Pet accidents: enzyme cleaner, then air dry
  • Sunscreen: see our sunscreen removal guide

What to Avoid

  • Water on code S (leaves rings)
  • Steam cleaning (can damage some microfibers)
  • Ammonia or bleach (damage fibers)
  • Over-wetting (pooling water stains)
  • Colored cleaning cloths (dye transfer)
  • Rough brushes (damage nap)

Maintenance Routine

  • Weekly: vacuum
  • Spot-clean immediately on spills
  • Quarterly: detailed seam clean
  • Annually: full deep clean

FAQ

How often should I deep clean a microfiber couch?
Once a year for average use. Twice a year for households with kids, pets, or heavy daily use. Weekly vacuum plus immediate spot-clean handles the rest.
Can I use water on a microfiber couch?
Only on code W or WS microfibers. Code S microfibers leave rings when wet. Check the cleaning code tag before any water-based cleaning.
Will deep cleaning damage the microfiber nap?
Not if you brush the nap back up after drying. Use a soft brush in a single direction to restore the original texture. Without brushing, the nap looks matted and tired.
Can I steam clean microfiber?
Some microfibers handle steam; others crack or discolor. Test in a hidden spot first. Generally safer to avoid steam on microfiber unless the manufacturer specifically endorses it.
What is the easiest microfiber stain to remove?
Fresh water-based stains (juice, coffee, soda). Blotted within 2 minutes, they usually lift entirely. Oil-based stains and set-in stains are much harder and often need professional cleaning.
