Cloud Couch Assembly: What to Expect and How to Prep
A cloud couch arrives in pieces, weighs more than you expect, and takes longer to set up than the product page suggests. Most brands advertise "tool-free assembly in 15 minutes." The reality is closer to 45 minutes with two people and some prep. Do it right and the couch sits perfectly for years. Do it wrong and the modules shift under you on day one.
Here is what to expect, how to prep your space, and the exact assembly sequence that avoids every common mistake.
Before Delivery Day
Measure Your Path
Front door, stairwell turns, elevator, hallway. Each module in a modular cloud couch is usually under 45 inches wide. Non-modular sofas can be 90+ inches. Measure the tightest point before delivery day. If anything is borderline, tell the delivery team to bring corner straps and felt sliders.
Clear the Space
Move every piece of furniture out of the room you are setting up in. You need a clear 8 x 8 foot staging area minimum to unbox and align modules. A cluttered space doubles assembly time.
Protect the Floor
Lay down a thick moving blanket or cardboard. Sliding modules on a hardwood or tile floor without protection will scratch it.
What Actually Arrives
For a typical modular cloud couch sectional, expect:
- 2 to 6 individual seat modules (boxed separately)
- 2 to 6 back cushions (in a single oversized box)
- A bag of connecting hardware (brackets, clips, bolts)
- Legs or feet (sometimes pre-attached, sometimes separate)
- A user guide with connector diagrams
- Optional: a care pack with fabric cleaner and a care guide
Every box has a weight. A single seat module is typically 60 to 100 pounds. Plan for two people on anything over 70 pounds to avoid back strain and scratched walls.
Tools You Need
Most cloud couches are billed as tool-free. You still want these within reach:
- A Phillips screwdriver (some leg bolts need it)
- A rubber mallet (for seating stubborn connectors)
- A flashlight (seeing inside the module to align brackets)
- A tape measure (confirming alignment against the wall)
- Scissors or a utility knife (for opening boxes without damaging fabric)
The Step-by-Step Assembly
Step 1: Unbox in Sequence
Unbox one module at a time. Do not pile empty boxes next to you. Flatten each box as you unpack it and move it out of the room. Clutter slows assembly and risks tripping.
Step 2: Attach Legs or Feet
If the legs are separate, flip each module upside down on a moving blanket and screw the legs in hand-tight. Do not over-tighten. Over-tightened legs can split the frame.
Step 3: Place the Corner or Chaise First
For L and U-shaped sectionals, position the corner or chaise module in its final spot first. All other modules reference off this anchor.
Step 4: Attach the Adjacent Modules
Each module connects to the next with a bracket, clip, or sliding hook. Align the top of the frames perfectly before engaging the connector. Misaligned frames cause gaps that show after you sit down.
Step 5: Test Each Joint
After connecting two modules, push them from opposite ends. If the joint shifts more than an eighth of an inch, reseat the connector. A solid joint should feel immovable.
Step 6: Position Against the Wall
Slide the assembled couch to its final position. Leave at least 2 inches between the back of the couch and the wall. This allows air circulation and prevents the fabric from rubbing the paint.
Step 7: Add Back Cushions
Place back cushions last. They lock into the frame either by a Velcro strip or by a lip that tucks behind the seat cushion. Fluff each one as you position it.
Step 8: Fluff the Seat Cushions
Cushions have been compressed in shipping. They arrive flat. Punch and fluff each one from both sides for 30 seconds. They rebound to their full shape within 24 to 48 hours as the fill relaxes.
If Something Does Not Fit
- Connector will not engage: you are probably not aligning the frames perfectly at the top. Lift both modules and line up the upper rails flush before locking.
- Cushion covers look loose: unzip and redistribute the fill. Covers are cut slightly roomy so they fit after the fill settles.
- Legs wobble: check that you seated them flush with the bottom frame. Carpet can give a false wobble. Rock the couch once seated to see if the wobble is in the legs or the floor underneath.
- Module arrived damaged: take photos of the box and the damage before you unpack further. Most brands require photos of the original packaging for a claim.
The First 48 Hours
Do not judge the couch until it has been in place for two full days. The cushions need that long to fully decompress from shipping. The cover fit improves as the fill reaches full volume. The overall silhouette changes noticeably.
Fluff and rotate cushions at the end of day one and again on day two. This helps the fill settle evenly. After day two, you have a realistic view of how the couch will look long-term. For ongoing care, see our cloud couch maintenance guide.
